How Did Art Therapy Originate?

Art therapy as a formal practice originated in the mid-20th century, emerging from earlier uses of art for emotional expression and healing. One of the first people to use the term "Art Therapy" was Adrian Hill, a British painter who, in 1942, discovered the therapeutic benefits of art while recovering from tuberculosis in a clinic. As he observed other patients suffering from similar illnesses, Hill encouraged them to express themselves through creative activities like drawing and painting. This process helped them cope with feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression caused by their illnesses (Cseri, 2024).

Following Hill's work, Edward Adamson became one of the key figures in the institutionalization of art therapy in the United Kingdom. He was hired as the first official researcher to explore how art could be used as a therapeutic tool for psychiatric patients. His work in psychiatric hospitals demonstrated how art-making could help patients express emotions, resolve internal conflicts, and begin the healing process.

Across the Atlantic, Margaret Naumburg, a key figure in the U.S., helped shape art therapy as a clinical practice. Naumburg viewed art as more than a supplementary tool; she recognized its potential as a primary therapeutic method. She coined the term "dynamic art therapy," which emphasized the role of art in unlocking the unconscious and aiding emotional exploration. Meanwhile, Edith Kramer contributed to the theoretical foundation of art therapy by introducing the idea of sublimation—transforming inner conflicts into creative expression (Cseri, 2024).

Throughout the 20th century, art therapy continued to expand, influenced by pioneers like Cliff Joseph, who incorporated mural-making as a means for patients to express themselves within the collective context of social and political struggles, particularly in marginalized communities. Dr. Lucille Venture, the first African American art therapist, and Sarah McGee, who integrated traditional African healing practices, both contributed to the enrichment of art therapy.
